Ultrasound done during the first trimester is referred to as early ultrasound as you do it in three months of pregnancy. The total number of ultrasounds may differ from women's and fetus's health conditions. Pregnant ladies suffering from obesity and asthma may have to go for more ultrasounds than a normal one.
Generally, 2-3 ultrasound scans are enough during a pregnancy. The first one is done during the first trimester to check for the confirmation of the pregnancy and the expected due date. The second one happens in the second trimester to ensure the bay is doing fine. More ultrasounds are advisable in case there are any complications.
Pregnancy can be detected as early as one and a half months of the pregnancy, and hence, it is recommended then only. Though the fetus starts developing after 2 months. If you are not sure about your last period date, it is not advisable to go for it before two months as it may not detect the fetus's heart rate.
The gel is water-based and does not harm your baby in any way. It is placed to get a complete picture of the fetus and women's reproductive organs. It also does not leave any spots on the outfit or your body in any way.
Patients who are going through these conditions are often asked to take this screening test:
It is an imaging screening through high-frequency sound waves, which gives a clear description of the baby's health and the mother's reproductive parts. There is no fixed number of ultrasounds that pregnant women need to undertake, and this varies from person to person, depending on their health.
Besides normal ultrasound, people may opt for 3D ultrasound and 4D ultrasound, and in case the doctor insists on checking the fetus's heart condition, they may ask for fetal echocardiography.
This ultrasound is popular as parental or obstetric ultrasound in the medical world as it employs high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the fetus. It also displays the condition of the mother's reproductive organs. The best part about this test is it is not painful at all. The patient is asked to lie on the table straight. Some gel is directly applied to the abdomen, which helps in sound wave transmission. With the transducer, the technician grabs black and white images, which are shown on the ultrasound machine. The gel is completely water-based and hence leaves no marks on the stomach or clothes. The sonography often takes 20-25 minutes. It is done twice, once with a full bladder and then with an empty bladder.
The patient's bladder has to be full, and hence, they are used to control their urine for a longer time so that the ultrasound can show the uterus and the baby's condition completely. The patient or the mother here is asked to drink a good amount of water before the process so that the scan can deliver clearer images.
It is rarely recommended before six weeks of pregnancy. No part of the fetus is visible before that and doctors can determine the viable pregnancy after that only.
